The theatre and dance school ‘Espazo Aberto’ was created by its artistic director, Carlos Neira, in 1992 and for more than 30 years it has been designing and giving pedagogical training in theatre and dance for adults, in continuous evolution, growing and adapting to the times. The avant-garde methodology developed is characterised by the fact that it includes not only those subjects linked to the theatrical aspect, but also all artistic manifestations that have to do with contemporary creation.
As can be seen on fiscal information websites such as eInforma, Espazo Aberto is a training centre for adults, but it is also a cultural and artistic reference in Galicia and throughout Spain. Great performers and dancers have studied at the school – renowned on the national scene in successful productions – and the activity of the centre has also given rise to many companies, plays, performances and publications in the artistic and cultural sphere.
The training activity in the school is very diversified and includes theatrical disciplines and approaches (theory and history, acting, acting in front of the camera, physical preparation, vocal technique, etc.), dance (musical theatre, tango and modern jazz fusion) and other courses of expression or body work.
Espazo Aberto’s teaching staff teach at other prestigious centres, such as the University of Santiago or the Galician Contemporary Art Centre, as well as working on films, shows and, in many cases, have been awarded prizes on the Galician audiovisual scene.
Thanks to the projection of the centre, regular training courses are organised every year for adults (from 18 years old) with a three-year curriculum. The students have the opportunity to discover their own resources, while acquiring the tools (physical, technical and intellectual) necessary for stage creation.
Learning groups are formed in the school (which has costumes, two large training rooms and elements such as mirrors, piano, sound equipment, etc.) to achieve expressive freedom, which is essential to develop the work of creation and transformation of reality, without prejudices or preconceived ideas. The students can show their work in open days held throughout the year and there are also courses to get in touch with theatre and its pedagogy (both with a professional and amateur motivation), as well as small experiences for children and teenagers.
