Contributing to the battle against climate change by helping to find more sustainable ways to move freight across short distances and reduce CO2 emissions in cities is the strategic vision behind the project CABIT (2020-2022).
Most freight in cities is currently moved over short distances by trucks and vans using fossil fuels, primarily diesel. A movement is currently growing to replace these types of haulage with e-cargo bikes which will make a significant contribution to air quality and reduce noise pollution. But at the moment, riders are not required to have any kind of driving licence in order to operate e-cargo bikes, and they do not receive any standardised training for using these bikes.
Therefore, the objectives of this project are to identify the knowledge, skills and competences required by e-cargo bike riders as well as to develop, test and promote a training toolkit to meet the needs of riders, and also the needs of the enterprises, companies and municipalities which are currently involved in the use of e-cargo bikes for delivering commercial light goods, or which are planning to do so.
To achieve these objectives, the consortium will develop the following materials and tools:
- Curriculum to develop the required competences for using e-cargo bikes
- Toolkit which includes e.g. the developed learning materials, training methods as well as practical tools for the companies themselves
- E-Learning Platform where e-cargo bike riders can access the learning materials and training activities
- Mobile phone App which allows e-cargo bike riders to access the developed materials wherever they are
- Training Manual to explain each aspect of the resources and suggest ways to exploit them to the full
The ultimate result of the project will be to contribute to the establishment and proliferation of e-cargo bikes by ensuring that the workforce can be properly prepared and trained, and has the necessary knowledge, skills and competences.
