FUTURE-STEM-HUB

Introduction

Secondary school STEM education currently lacks coverage of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) both in curricular and extracurricular activities, largely due to the perception of their complexity, which persists even after students graduate. However, to positively influence students’ future opportunities, STEM education must adapt to the rapid technological advancements that affect various industries and daily life.

FUTURE-STEM-HUB aims to advance and facilitate the integration of AI topics into STEM education at secondary schools.

RATIONALE

In order to prepare informed and responsible participants in a technology-driven society, ready for future educational and career pathways in STEM, it is essential for students to get exposed to emerging and future-oriented technologies such as AI already at the secondary school level.

Yet, AI is not integrated into secondary school STEM training, and many students perceive it as complex and inaccessible.

The FUTURE-STEM-HUB project aims to address this gap by sensitizing young learners to AI from an early age. By providing teaching resources and online learning experiences tailored to secondary school students’ capabilities, the project seeks to demystify AI and spark interest in STEM fields, thus contributing to cultivating a culture of lifelong learning and innovation in STEM education.

GOALS

The primary aim of the project is to advance and facilitate the integration of AI topics into STEM education at the secondary school level.

To achieve this goal, specific objectives have been outlined:

SO1: To provide teachers and students with educational materials that introduce the fundamental concepts of AI and foster awareness and discussion regarding their societal and ethical implications.

SO2: To furnish teachers and students with practical learning materials that facilitate students’ initial forays into AI using Python programming.

SO3: To equip teachers with methodological and instructional support for designing and delivering STEM training in the field of AI, thereby enhancing the capacity for incorporating AI topics into secondary school curricula within the project regions.

SO4: To widely disseminate the project results so as to foster the integration of AI topics into secondary school learning environments, thus supporting the transition to AI-benefited EU society.

The FUTURE-STEM-HUB project includes developing interactive educational materials for secondary school students on AI fundamentals, alongside practical resources and tutorials in Python or Scratch for hands-on learning. Teachers will receive lesson plans to integrate AI topics into school curricula. Through validation workshops, coding challenges, transnational and national teacher training, students & teachers will assess these resources while improving their Computer Science & coding skills.
